Newswire Responding to a call from Gulf South Rising, groups in Louisiana, Texas, and New York rose up today to shut down business as usual on the fifth anniversary of the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill that discharged 4.9 million barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico. According to their website, Gulf South Rising “is a regional movement of coordinated actions and events to highlight the impact of the global climate crisis on the Gulf South region (Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida). Through collaborative events and actions around strategic dates in 2015 GSR demands a just transition away from extractive industries, discriminatory policies and unjust practices that hinder equitable recovery from disaster and impedes the development of sustainable communities.“In Plaquemines Parish, an event was held where people from around the Gulf spoke to the trechery of the oil company and public officials who have been either slow or dismissive of the claims by locals.
